The word impressionism was used to describe a style of painting developed by a group of French artists in the mid-ninteenth century.
It was also used to describe the style of music developed in the late nineteenth century

Impressionist art have many characteristics, including visible brush strokes and emphasis on light and how it changes.
Claude Monet was an impressionist painter in the 19th to 20th century. His most known paintings are The sunflowers and water lilies.

Claude Debussy was born in 1862 and died in 1918. Three characteristics of Debussy's music are: Sensitivity towards timbre (like the impressionist painters' sensitivity towards colour), use of scales and modes from medieval and Far Eastern music and the use of chords to create descriptive effects.
Debussy used different types of scales to give his melodies character and create particular moods or effects on his music. Some of his scales originate in classical western music (major and minor). Some of his scales, he discovered in medieval music (modes) others he discovered in the gamelan music of Java and Bali (pentatonic). Sometimes he made his own scales.
